Welcome to Dr. Marc Weissbluth's Baby and Children Sleep Blog

Baby and Children Sleep Training Expert. Author of 'Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child'

My name is Marc Weissbluth and I’ve been a pediatrician since 1973.
I began my academic career in Chicago where my research mainly focused on why some babies fuss and cry more than others during the first few months, and why some babies develop sleeping problems. Every new parent becomes short of sleep and wants their baby to sleep well so they themselves can get more sleep. But, as an academician and practicing pediatrician, I realized that most new parents did not fully appreciate how vital healthy sleep was for their baby.

I wanted to share the findings from my research with parents around the world, and published the following books: ‘Crybabies’ (1984), ‘Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child’ (1987), ‘Your Fussy Baby’ (2003) and ‘Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Twins’ (2009).

‘Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child’ has sold over 1 million copies around the world, and this summer 2021 will see a 5th edition being published that includes a new 16 page 10-step guide for a good night’s sleep.

To provide even more help to sleepy parents, I have created this website and baby sleep blog where I will share with you what parents have taught me and what I have learned from published studies.

Best wishes for sweet dreams. Marc

Marc Weissbluth, M.D., Professor of Clinical Pediatrics, Emeritus, Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern University, Chicago

Bedtime: A Review

To better understand the importance of sleep timing (when your child falls asleep), appreciate the fact that there is a genetically controlled and automatic circadian sleep rhythm (Blog Post 112). This 24-hour rhythm of brain output is for sleep and wakefulness; it develops in infancy, and changes as the child develops.  Parents cannot change this rhythm.
